ACTIVITIES

Among the benefits of retirement is that you can try new activities and enjoy old favorites you never had the time for while you were working.  Better yet, getting out and about keeps you both physically and mentally healthy.

Here are the activities currently offered by SVCT.

BOOK CLUB

Expand your horizons and join our group of folks who love to read. Our book club discusses, shares opinions, insights and interpretations of a variety of books. The Book Club is Virtual so you can participate from the comfort of your home or any other location that is connected to the internet.

TEA and TALK

Join our informal get together on the Branford Green. Bring your favorite folding chair and snack and partake in the conversation.  In the event of inclement weather we meet in one of the Coffee Shops around the Green. There is always a topic of interest for everyone to take part in.

MAH JONGG

Our observations shows that playing games helps keep the mind sharp while having fun. There is no shortage of laughs and conversation while playing the game of skill and chance. Mah Jongg has attracted many players around the world for decades. So why not show up and give it a try? Lessons are available virtually.  Set and card is provided!

ART TALKS

Art can take us on a journey to faraway lands or into the distant past. It can conjure strong emotions and deep thoughts, or simply dazzle us with its visual brilliance.

And lucky for us, we have noted guest lecturer Dr. Marcie Slepian, a Ph.D. in art history from Yale, to guide us on that journey. The Art Talks are jointly sponsored by SVCT and the Guilford Public Library.

SOCIAL GATHERINGS

Good food, good conversation and a wonderful way for members to catch up with friends and meet new members. Either at a pot luck gathering or at a special venue, we always have a great time.

METROPOLITAN OPERA TALKS

The music, the stories, the costumes, the sheer vocal artistry -

We are very fortunate to have talks led by Yale School of Music Associates, who provide insight into each production. The talk, which is co sponsored with the Guilford Public Library, precedes the Metropolitan Opera HD live presentations.

Yoga - Activities

CHAIR YOGA

With chair yoga, you can increasing your flexibility and improve your cardiovascular and circulatory health, as well as prevent falls by developing strength and balance, without—yes—leaving your chair. The group meets virtually on Monday and Thursday morning at 11 am for about 45 minutes. All that’s needed: a chair without arms. The class is free with a suggested monthly donation of $10.

SVCT WALKING GROUP

Who’s up for a stroll? Contrary to popular belief, exercise can be fun. A group of members meet for a slow-paced hike on flat ground in a picturesque area of the shoreline. The details of each hike are posted beforehand, including distance and terrain.

HEALTH and WELLNESS

Come to our talks to learn more about ways you can actively participate in your own physical, mental, and social well being, acquiring information that can help you make informed choices that can enhance your quality of life.

BRIDGE

"Bridge departed from whist with the creation of "Biritch" in the 19th century and evolved through the late 19th and early 20th centuries to form the present game. The first rule book for bridge, dated 1886, is Biritch, or Russian Whist written by John Collinson, an English financier working in Ottoman Constantinople.”

Kathy Fox, retired SVCT Board member, is in charge of setting up Bridge card games.

ACTIVE MEMBERS SERVICE PROJECTS

What better way to share talents and expertise developed over a lifetime than by spending time in service to others? SVCT members and volunteers have read aloud to young people and helped other seniors stay active and engaged. By spending time in service to others, members report feeling a sense of meaning and appreciation, both given and received.
