The Story of Familiar Faces: Art of the Public
Have you ever wondered where your favorite paintings at Metropolitan Museum of Art came from?
From the very beginnings of the museum in the 1870's the millionaires of the Gilded Age were officers of the Met, and many well known collections came to the museum after the death of prominent New York businessmen.  In addition to J.P. Morgan, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and Connecticut's own Collis P. Huntington, several forward thinking women such as Louisine Havemeyer and Lila Acheson Wallace were committed to making the Met a palace of beauty and culture. Come hear about the building, the collectors, and beloved masterpieces by Titian, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh and O'Keefe.
