Discuss " The Emperor of Gladness" by Ocean Vuong. You’re warmly invited to join the Shoreline Village Group for an engaging discussion of The Emperor of Gladness by Ocean Vuong. Together, we’ll gather in a spirit of curiosity and reflection to explore Vuong’s luminous language, his weaving of memory and imagination, and the ways his work opens doorways into both joy and sorrow. Whether this is your first time reading Vuong or you are already familiar with his writing, your thoughts and reflections will be a welcome part of our circle. Our gathering will offer space to share impressions, ask questions, and listen deeply to one another. As always, the conversation is meant to be accessible and thoughtful, welcoming all perspectives and interpretations. During her presentation, Dr. Florencia Montagnini will discuss why she is working with the Yale School of the Environment to promote agroforestry systems—farming approaches that incorporate trees into agricultural landscapes. She will explain why agroforestry is gaining global relevance as a sustainable land-use alternative that can help mitigate and adapt to climate change, while also acting as a “biodiversity island.” Dr. Montagnini will also explore how emerging financial tools—such as Voluntary Biodiversity Credits—can be used to support agroforestry initiatives, and why private companies and other stakeholders are increasingly investing in these systems to help meet their sustainability goals. This program is co-sponsored with Shoreline Village CT and is free and open to all. Please register: https://guilfordfreelibrary.org/upcoming-events/

Zadie Smith’s On Beauty is a compelling family saga set in a college town outside Boston, exploring the clashes and connections between two academic families. The novel skillfully portrays complex relationships filled with love, rivalry, and cultural conflicts. Smith’s rich character development brings to life a diverse cast, from the liberal and distant Howard to his strong-willed wife Kiki and their children, revealing their human flaws and strengths with empathy. The narrative delves into themes of race, politics, and personal identity, reflecting social tensions that remain relevant today. Smith’s prose is eloquent and insightful, weaving humor and drama into a thoughtful examination of beauty beyond surface appearances. This richly layered story captivates readers with its depth and warmth, making On Beauty a modern classic that invites reflection on family, society, and what it means to be truly beautiful.
